Youth leading the kōrero

This year’s Youth Week theme, “Our voices matter! We deserve to be heard / Taringa whakarongo! Ki te reo o ngā taiohi!” reflects a simple truth: rangatahi deserve to be heard in the spaces where decisions about their lives are made.

Ngā Rangatira Mō Apōpō is made up of rangatahi with lived experience of parental incarceration. They understand the impact first‑hand, not as a statistic, but as something they navigate every day.

At the heart of this webinar is their Bill of Rights for Tamariki Impacted by Whānau Incarceration. That’s why their voices matter so deeply.

During this webinar, rangatahi will share:

  • what that their rights mean in real life

  • how it is currently experienced by tamariki

  • what needs to change in policy and practice

  • how systems can make these rights a lived reality for future generations

From developing a Bill of Rights for Tamariki Impacted by Whānau Incarceration to presenting at Parliament for the Kaiwhatu Kura Whānau role, the young leaders are turning lived experience into action.

Together, we share a commitment to listening, and we mean truly listening, to rangatahi voices, and ensuring their whakaaro is heard by the people and systems who can help make lasting change.

This Youth Week, we invite our community, supporters, and partners to listen, learn, and be part of the change growing across Aotearoa New Zealand so that all mokopuna can live their best lives.

Because they know change is possible, and their voices are how it begins.
