Hear directly from the rangatahi of Ngā Rangatira Mō Āpōpō, with reflections from sector leaders including, the Children's Commissioner, Dr Claire Achmad.
Growing up with whānau in prison provides a unique lens on the justice system and the supports surrounding it. Through this lens, rangatahi shared what is challenging, and most importantly, what needs to change.
For Youth Week 2026, Ngā Rangatira Mō Āpōpō (Youth Advisory Panel), in partnership with Mana Mokopuna – Children’s Commissioner, hosted a webinar exploring exactly that.
What you'll learn:
At the heart of this kōrero is the Bill of Rights for Tamariki Impacted by Whānau Incarceration, brought to life by Ngā Rangatira Mō Āpōpō.
In this webinar, they unpack what these rights mean in everyday life and what needs to change to make them a lived reality for future tamariki.
It calls for:
meaningful investment in whānau and community support
stronger public understanding
and systems that not only hear young people, but proactively support them.
As Children’s Commissioner Dr Claire Achmad reflects, the challenge is clear:
How do we work together to turn their rights into reality?
Their Call-to-Action
This is a solution‑focused conversation, grounded in lived experience and youth leadership.
It offers:
real insight into what rangatahi need
a deeper understanding of how systems impact everyday lives
and clear guidance for those working across justice, social and community sectors
Most importantly, this webinar honours the strength and bravery it takes to share their stories, and calls on us to move beyond listening, toward real action.
