“The consistency of kindness and care that the Pillars staff show in all our interactions makes me feel valued. This to me is the most important thing.” – Current Mentor

We know becoming a mentor can feel like a big step. You might be wondering:
What will my relationship with my mentee be like?
What if I don’t know what to do or say?
Will I have support?
The truth is you don’t have to have all the answers.
Mentoring is a deeply rewarding and transformative experience. But it’s also meant to be fun and full of connection. From the moment you sign up through to your weekly hangouts, you’ll have a strong support system at every step.
Mentor Orientation
“The orientation was super good… very informative, eye-opening on what to expect.”
Before you meet a mentee, you’ll go through a full mentor orientation. This is where you'll:
meet your amazing mentoring coordinators
learn what to expect
get guidance around safety and confidentiality
gain practical tools to help you build a great relationship with your buddy.
It’s also a great chance to connect with others on the same journey.
“I found the training they delivered to be exemplary… and the group activities consistently run by them (Pillars mentoring team)….another standout is the clarity around roles, so there is no expectation or confusion... I think that's really pivotal to the programme being successful.” – Current Mentor
The Matching Process
Our matching process is carefully considered.
We match you with your mentee based on shared interests, personality, and activities you both enjoy.

And you won’t go into your first meeting alone. A mentoring coordinator will be with you to help create a warm, welcoming start with your mentee and their whānau.
The Mentor Community Around You
Mentoring may be one-to-one, but you’re surrounded by a vibrant, supportive community that includes:
Monthly Mentor Supervision
Every month, our team runs in-person trainings to add new tools to your mentoring toolkit.
It’s also a chance for mentors to connect, share experiences, ask questions, and learn from one another.
Private Online Mentor Group
Our private Facebook group is a go-to space where mentors share wins, ideas for hangouts, ask questions, and connect with others. Some even link up to plan outings together!
Ongoing Support
Your mentoring coordinators are only a call or email away. Whether you have a question or just want to talk something through, we’re here.
Mentoring Events
“Genuine care and passion will always make a culture positive. The Pillars team is so thorough and thoughtful in the way they prepare for events.” – Current Mentor
Throughout the year, we host fun events for mentors and their buddies, from sailing and surf days to zoo trips, ropes courses, and more.

These are fun opportunities for your mentee to meet other tamariki, and for you to bond in new ways, all while connecting with fellow mentors and our team.
What You Really Gain from Mentoring
“I just hope our experience inspires others to become mentors — to have an open heart and see how impactful this can be for rangatahi.” - Current Mentor
